NDP demands Conservatives honour their commitment to widows and programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARCH 10, 2008

TRURO, N.S. - NDP Veterans Affairs Critic Peter Stoffer (Sackville-Eastern

Shore) and Joyce Carter, a well-known advocate for veterans' widows from

Cape Breton, will press the Conservative government to honour its promise

to extend the Veterans Independence Program (VIP) to all veterans' widows.

""The Conservatives did not meet their commitment in the 2008 federal

budget to assist all veterans' widows and placed further restrictions on

eligibility including an income/means test,"" said Stoffer.

Stoffer and Carter will address members of the Veterans' Widows and

Widowers Association in Truro. The organization is the only one of its kind in

Canada and has approximately 65 members.
